R2v3 (Responsible Recycling)
R2v3 is the certification standard for responsible electronics reuse and recycling. We support the management-system, data security, documentation and audit-readiness work and coordinate the external certification body, partnering with specialists where needed.
What R2 is
R2v3 is the current version of the Responsible Recycling standard for facilities that reuse, refurbish and recycle electronics. It sets requirements across the chain of custody, data sanitisation, environmental and worker health and safety, and the downstream handling of materials, so that electronics are managed responsibly and securely through to end of life.
Certification is awarded by an accredited certification body following an audit, not by a consultancy. tr3labs supports the management-system, data security, documentation and audit-readiness side of the work and partners with environmental and recycling specialists for technical and material-handling matters; we are never the certification body.
The structure of the standard
Part · Core Requirements
A set of ten requirements that every R2v3 certified facility must meet regardless of what it does with electronics.
Core · Data Security
Controls for protecting and sanitising the data held on devices as they move through the facility.
Core · Focus Materials and EH&S
Rules for managing hazardous focus materials and running an environmental, health and safety management system.
Core · Tracking Throughput
Chain of custody and record keeping that account for equipment and materials from receipt to final disposition.
Process · Data Sanitisation (Appendix B)
Additional requirements for facilities that erase, purge or destroy data on media before reuse or recycling.
Process · Test and Repair (Appendix C)
Requirements for facilities that return equipment to working, resaleable condition through testing and repair.
Process · Downstream and Materials (Appendices A, E, F)
Controls for the downstream recycling chain, materials recovery and brokering activities a facility carries out.
Scope · Certificate of applicable appendices
The certificate names the Core plus only the process appendices that match the activities actually audited at that site.
Who needs it
- Electronics reuse, refurbishment and recycling facilities
- IT asset disposition providers that handle end-of-life devices and the data on them
- Organisations whose customers require responsible, secure downstream handling of electronics
What you get
- A gap assessment and prioritised roadmap against the applicable R2v3 requirements
- Management-system, chain-of-custody and data sanitisation documentation
- An internal audit and management review records
- Certification readiness and support through the external audit
Timelines depend on the size and complexity of your facility, the R2v3 processes in scope and your starting point. We scope it honestly up front rather than promise a fixed number of weeks.
Current version
R2v3 is the current version of the R2 standard, administered by Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI), and it replaced the earlier 2013 edition of R2. It restructured the standard into ten Core Requirements that apply to every facility, plus process requirement appendices that apply only where a facility performs that activity, and SERI has since issued clarifications and amendments to it. If you hold an older R2 certificate you move to R2v3 at your next certification cycle, and the practical work is confirming which process appendices now apply to your operation and evidencing the controls they add.
What it costs
Two costs sit side by side here. tr3labs charges a scoped advisory and implementation fee, quoted up front once we understand the size of your facility, the process appendices in scope and your current starting point; and because R2v3 leads to a certificate, the accredited certification body you appoint charges separately on its own schedule for the audit and the surveillance that follows. tr3labs is never the certification body, auditor or accreditation authority, and where environmental or material handling specialists are needed they are engaged separately too. We scope it with you rather than quote blind.
How tr3labs gets you there
Scope and gap assessment
We define the scope and the applicable R2v3 process requirements, map your current practices against them, and hand you a prioritised roadmap to close the gaps.
Build the management system and controls
We help you produce the documentation, chain-of-custody and data sanitisation processes the standard requires. Data security sits squarely within our expertise, and we partner with environmental and recycling specialists for material-handling matters.
Internal audit and evidence
We run an internal audit and management review so the system is operating and evidenced before an external auditor arrives.
Certification support
We prepare you for the audit by your chosen accredited certification body and support you through to the certificate and the surveillance that follows. tr3labs is not the certification body.
R2v3 compared with e-Stewards
Both certify responsible electronics reuse and recycling, so facilities and their customers often weigh one against the other.
| R2v3 | e-Stewards | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Reuse, refurbishment and recycling of electronics | Reuse and recycling of electronics and e-waste |
| Standard owner | Sustainable Electronics Recycling International (SERI) | Basel Action Network (BAN) |
| Core idea | Core requirements plus activity based process appendices | Conformance built on top of ISO 14001 with strict export rules |
| Who asks for it | Customers needing audited, secure downstream handling | Buyers prioritising strict export and hazardous waste controls |
| Audit model | Accredited certification body audits named scope | Accredited certification body audits against the e-Stewards standard |
| Often held with | ISO 14001, ISO 27001, ISO 45001 | ISO 14001 and data destruction controls |
R2 FAQ
- How much does R2v3 certification cost?
- Our scoped advisory and implementation fee is quoted up front; because R2v3 leads to a certificate, the accredited certification body you appoint charges separately for the audit and the surveillance that follows. Where environmental or material-handling specialists are needed they are engaged separately too.
- How long does R2v3 take?
- It depends on the size and complexity of your facility, the R2v3 processes in scope and your starting point. We scope the timeline honestly up front rather than promise a fixed number of weeks.
- What does R2v3 cover?
- R2v3 covers responsible electronics reuse and recycling, including chain of custody, data sanitisation, environmental and worker health and safety, and the responsible handling of downstream materials through to end of life.
- How does tr3labs help with the data security side of R2v3?
- Data sanitisation and secure handling of devices are core to R2v3 and squarely within our expertise. We help you build and evidence the data security controls while partnering with recycling specialists for material-handling matters.
- Does tr3labs issue the R2v3 certificate?
- No. Certification is awarded by an accredited certification body after an audit. tr3labs builds and runs the management system with you, prepares the evidence, and supports you through the audit.
