ISO 9001
ISO 9001 (Quality management)
ISO 9001 is the global standard for a quality management system. We help you build and run the management system, prepare the documentation and evidence, and coordinate the external certification body.
What ISO 9001 is
ISO 9001 is the international standard for a quality management system (QMS). It requires you to understand your context and customers, define your processes, manage risk, and run the whole thing as a managed system with leadership, objectives, internal audit and management review aimed at consistent quality and continual improvement.
Certification is awarded by an independent, accredited certification body following a two-stage audit, not by a consultancy. tr3labs supports the management-system, governance and audit-readiness side of the work; the certificate itself comes from your chosen certification body.
The structure of the standard
Clause 4 · Context
Understand your organisation, the interested parties that matter and the scope of the quality management system.
Clause 5 · Leadership
Top-management commitment, a quality policy, and clear roles, responsibilities and authorities.
Clause 6 · Planning
Address risks and opportunities, set measurable quality objectives and plan how to reach them.
Clause 7 · Support
The resources, people, competence, awareness, communication and documented information the system needs.
Clause 8 · Operation
Plan and control the processes that deliver your product or service, from requirements through to delivery.
Clause 9 · Performance evaluation
Monitor, measure, audit internally and run management reviews to see how the system is performing.
Clause 10 · Improvement
Handle nonconformities, take corrective action and drive continual improvement.
Who needs it
- Organisations whose customers or tenders require a recognised quality management certificate
- Manufacturers and service providers seeking consistent, auditable quality processes
- Teams that want a durable management system rather than ad hoc quality controls
What you get
- A gap assessment and prioritised roadmap against ISO 9001
- QMS documentation, defined processes and quality objectives
- An internal audit programme and management review records
- Certification readiness and support through the external audit
Timelines depend on the size of your organisation, the complexity of your processes and your starting point. We scope it honestly up front rather than promise a fixed number of weeks.
Current version
The current edition is ISO 9001:2015, amended by Amendment 1:2024 which added explicit climate-change considerations to the context and planning clauses. A revised ISO 9001:2026 is expected, after which certification bodies typically allow a transition window of around three years. Certifying now on the current edition is the pragmatic path: the work carries over and a later transition is far smaller than a first certification.
What it costs
Two costs sit side by side. tr3labs charges a scoped fee for building and running the management system and getting you audit-ready, quoted up front once we understand your size and starting point. Separately, your chosen certification body charges for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits and the annual surveillance that follows; those fees are set by the body and scale with the size and number of your sites. We will not quote a number blind, we scope it with you first.
How tr3labs gets you there
Scope and gap assessment
We define the QMS scope, map your current processes against ISO 9001, and hand you a prioritised roadmap to close the gaps.
Build the management system
We help you produce the required documentation, define your processes and quality objectives, and set up the risk-based thinking the standard expects. We focus on the management system and partner with domain specialists where deeper technical input is needed.
Internal audit and evidence
We run internal audits and a management review so the system is operating and evidenced before an external auditor arrives.
Certification support
We prepare you for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits by your chosen accredited certification body and support you through to the certificate and the surveillance cycle that follows. tr3labs is not the certification body.
ISO 9001 or ISO 27001?
Buyers sometimes ask for one when they mean the other. They are different management systems, built on a shared structure, and are often held together.
| ISO 9001 | ISO 27001 | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Quality management: consistent, improving products and services | Information security management: protecting data and systems |
| Who asks for it | Procurement, tenders and supply-chain qualification | Customers, security questionnaires and enterprise buyers |
| Core idea | A managed, audited quality system across clauses 4 to 10 | A risk-based set of security controls run as a system |
| Audit model | Two-stage certification by an accredited body, then surveillance | Two-stage certification by an accredited body, then surveillance |
| Often held with | ISO 13485, ISO 14001 and sector schemes | SOC 2 and ISO 27701 |
ISO 9001 FAQ
- How much does ISO 9001 certification cost?
- Our scoped advisory and implementation fee is quoted up front; separately, the accredited certification body charges on its own schedule for the two-stage audit and the surveillance cycle that follows. tr3labs is never that certifier or auditor.
- How long does ISO 9001 take?
- It depends on the size of your organisation, the complexity of your processes and your starting point. We scope the timeline honestly up front rather than promise a fixed number of weeks.
- Does tr3labs issue the ISO 9001 certificate?
- No. Certification is awarded by an independent, accredited certification body after a two-stage audit. tr3labs builds and runs the management system with you, prepares the evidence, and supports you through the audit.
- Can ISO 9001 integrate with our other management systems?
- Yes. ISO 9001 shares a common structure with other ISO management-system standards such as ISO 27001 and ISO 14001, so they can be run as an integrated system. We design the system with that in mind where it helps you.
- What does an ISO 9001 audit involve?
- An accredited body runs a Stage 1 review of your documentation and readiness, then a Stage 2 audit of the system in operation, followed by periodic surveillance audits. We prepare you for each stage.
- Does the certification body need to be accredited?
- It matters more than most buyers realise. An accredited certification body is one overseen by a recognised national accreditation authority, and an accredited certificate is the one procurement teams and tenders actually accept. Unaccredited certificates are cheaper but are routinely rejected in due diligence. We help you choose an accredited body and prepare for its audit.
