ISO 14001
ISO 14001 (Environmental management)
ISO 14001 is the global standard for an environmental management system. We support the management-system, documentation and audit-readiness work and coordinate the external certification body, partnering with environmental specialists where deeper technical input is needed.
What ISO 14001 is
ISO 14001 is the international standard for an environmental management system (EMS). It requires you to understand your environmental aspects and impacts, meet your compliance obligations, set objectives, and run the whole thing as a managed system with leadership, internal audit and management review aimed at continual improvement.
Certification is awarded by an independent, accredited certification body following a two-stage audit, not by a consultancy. tr3labs supports the management-system, governance and audit-readiness side and partners with environmental specialists for technical assessments; we do not provide environmental engineering expertise ourselves.
The structure of the standard
Clause 4 · Context of the organisation
You determine the internal and external issues, interested parties and environmental conditions that frame the environmental management system and its scope.
Clause 5 · Leadership
Top management takes accountability for the system, sets the environmental policy and assigns the roles that keep it running.
Clause 6 · Planning
You address risks and opportunities, environmental aspects and compliance obligations, then set measurable environmental objectives and plans to meet them.
Clause 7 · Support
You provide the resources, competence, awareness, communication and documented information the system needs to function.
Clause 8 · Operation
You plan and control the operations tied to significant aspects and prepare for and respond to potential environmental emergencies.
Clause 9 · Performance evaluation
You monitor, measure and evaluate environmental performance and compliance, run internal audits and hold management review.
Clause 10 · Improvement
You act on nonconformities, apply corrective action and improve the system over time, completing the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.
Who needs it
- Organisations whose customers, tenders or regulators expect an environmental management certificate
- Manufacturers, operators and service providers with significant environmental aspects
- Teams that want a durable system for managing environmental responsibilities and obligations
What you get
- A gap assessment and prioritised roadmap against ISO 14001
- EMS documentation, an aspects and impacts register and objectives
- An internal audit programme and management review records
- Certification readiness and support through the external audit
Timelines depend on the size of your organisation, the significance of your environmental aspects and your starting point. We scope it honestly up front rather than promise a fixed number of weeks.
Current version
The current edition is ISO 14001:2015, which introduced the common high-level structure now shared across ISO management-system standards. A revision is in progress through ISO technical committee TC 207, so the clause numbering and intent described here reflect the 2015 text that remains in force. When a new edition is published, certified organisations are normally given a defined transition period to move across, and we would help you read the final wording and plan any changes rather than act before the revised standard is confirmed.
What it costs
Two costs sit side by side here. tr3labs charges a scoped advisory and implementation fee, quoted up front once we understand your size, your environmental aspects and where you are starting from; where deeper technical environmental input is needed we partner with specialists, and that is set out in the scope. Because ISO 14001 carries a certificate, the independent, accredited certification body you appoint charges separately on its own schedule for the two-stage audit and the surveillance cycle that follows. tr3labs is never the certification body, auditor or regulator, so we scope the work with you rather than quote blind.
How tr3labs gets you there
Scope and gap assessment
We define the EMS scope, help identify your environmental aspects and compliance obligations, map your current state against ISO 14001, and hand you a prioritised roadmap.
Build the management system
We help you produce the documentation, define objectives and operational controls, and set up the processes the standard expects. We focus on the management system and partner with environmental specialists where technical assessment is needed.
Internal audit and evidence
We run internal audits and a management review so the system is operating and evidenced before an external auditor arrives.
Certification support
We prepare you for the Stage 1 and Stage 2 audits by your chosen accredited certification body and support you through to the certificate and the surveillance cycle that follows. tr3labs is not the certification body.
ISO 14001 and ISO 9001 compared
The two share the same management-system structure and are often run together, which is why they get confused.

ISO 14001 FAQ
- How much does ISO 14001 certification cost?
- Our scoped advisory and implementation fee is quoted up front; because ISO 14001 carries a certificate, the accredited certification body you appoint charges separately for the two-stage audit and the surveillance cycle. Where deeper technical environmental input is needed, specialists bill separately.
- How long does ISO 14001 take?
- It depends on the size of your organisation, the significance of your environmental aspects and your starting point. We scope the timeline honestly up front rather than promise a fixed number of weeks.
- Does tr3labs provide environmental engineering expertise?
- No. tr3labs supports the management-system, documentation, internal audit and audit-readiness work. For technical environmental assessments and specialist measurements we partner with environmental specialists.
- Can ISO 14001 be integrated with ISO 9001 or ISO 45001?
- Yes. These standards share a common structure, so an environmental management system can be run alongside quality and occupational health and safety systems as an integrated whole. We design the system that way where it helps you.
- Does tr3labs issue the ISO 14001 certificate?
- No. Certification is awarded by an independent, accredited certification body after a two-stage audit. tr3labs builds and runs the management system with you, prepares the evidence, and supports you through the audit.
